Meet The Floor of Your Core
— This week we have a guest blogger, Dr. Brianne Grogan, PT, DPT the founder of Vibrant Pelvic Health
Dr. Grogan is hosting a free community event at Move Pilates in October, keep reading below to register for the event!
Your pelvic floor is a small group of muscles in the center of your body with a big, big job! A healthy pelvic floor helps with bladder and bowel control, sexual and reproductive health, and core stability. When your pelvic floor is working well, you don’t even notice! Life is good, you’re comfortable and dry… But when it’s NOT working well, you can experience embarrassing leakage, unsatisfying or painful sex, back pain, pelvic heaviness, and instability.
Your pelvic floor is naturally worked in Pilates, but even so, you might be dealing with dysfunction or weakness that you don’t even know about. Both lax pelvic muscles (hypotonic) and tight pelvic floor muscles (hypertonic) are weak muscles… and many people have a combination of both. Pelvic floor issues – resulting in pain, incontinence, and/or pelvic organ prolapse – are incredibly common and yet under-recognized and under-discussed.
What causes these pelvic floor issues? It can be from patterns of muscular overuse or underuse, scar tissue (i.e. from injuries sustained during injuries, surgery, or labor and delivery), or patterns of stress and emotional “holding.”
The good news: there’s help! Seek the care of a pelvic floor physical therapist. These professionals can work MAGIC on an area that you might have deemed unfixable.
In addition to finding a local pelvic floor physical therapist for an in-person evaluation and treatment, you can learn more about your pelvic floor via my community offerings.
